A shocking revelation has emerged in the medical community, leaving many concerned about the integrity of patient care. The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has issued a stern warning, declaring that doctors' duty of care is not for sale. But here's where it gets controversial... some doctors have reportedly been leasing their credentials, raising serious ethical questions.
MMA's president, Datuk Dr Thirunavukarasu Rajoo, expressed deep concern over these practices. He emphasized that the sale of prescription medicines, such as Ozempic and Mounjaro, without proper medical assessment, is a grave breach of ethics and a violation of the sacred duty of care owed to patients.
"MMA supports rigorous investigation and enforcement by the authorities where such breaches are identified. We must uphold the highest standards of our profession."
Dr Thirunavukarasu clarified that a Letter of Credentialing and Privileging (LCP) is not a tradable document. Even if it's 'rented' out, the duty of care remains with the doctor, and this responsibility is non-negotiable.
"When a clinic operates under a doctor's name without genuine supervision, the doctor is still accountable. This duty of care is a legal and ethical obligation."
He also highlighted the dangers of using potent metabolic medications as quick cosmetic fixes. These medications, such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, were designed for specific clinical purposes, including diabetes and obesity management, under strict medical supervision.
"They are not shortcuts to a desired lifestyle. Prescribing these without proper assessment and follow-up can lead to severe complications."
Dr Thirunavukarasu warned that such practices expose patients to risks ranging from gastrointestinal issues to more serious health complications. Additionally, the inappropriate demand for these medications may limit access for patients who genuinely need them for chronic disease management.
"MMA reminds doctors that every prescription and every facility operating under their name reflects their professional responsibility. Financial gains should never compromise clinical standards."
He advised the public to verify the registration of their doctors and ensure that consultations include thorough assessments and counseling.
"No medical procedure is without risk, and informed consent is crucial. Patients should be aware of all potential benefits, risks, and alternatives."
Recent investigations by SAYS have exposed a dark side to the medical profession, revealing that some alleged practitioners are endangering lives by selling prescription drugs without proper screening and renting out their licenses to fuel the black market in aesthetic clinics.
This unethical behavior has allowed these practitioners to profit from the growing craze for slimming and beauty, raking in thousands each month.
The MMA's stance is clear: medicine should not be transactional. The duty of care is a sacred trust that doctors must uphold, and any compromise on this front is a violation of the core principles of the medical profession.
