The Oregon Trail: A Journey's End and a New Beginning
As the sun rose over the camp, a sense of excitement and anticipation filled the air. After a grueling 3.5 months, the hikers were nearing the end of their California leg, with just a few miles left to traverse. The morning mist, a result of a cloud inversion, added an ethereal quality to the surroundings, almost as if nature itself was bidding them farewell.

Drom and I, eager to connect with the outside world, climbed to the ridge, where we finally had cell service. We booked an Airbnb, not just for ourselves but also for our fellow hikers, Posh and Birdman. Tomorrow, we would officially enter Ashland, Oregon.
As we neared the California-Oregon border, a sense of camaraderie grew among us. Posh, Drom, and I had devised a plan to meet at Donemore Cabin, a mere half-mile from the border, and cross together. The trail log at the cabin, a testament to the journeys of many before us, brought a tear to my eye as we bid California farewell.
Trail Magic and Warm Welcomes
A kind day hiker brought news of trail magic ahead, and sure enough, we stumbled upon a delightful couple living out of their van, accompanied by their adorable dogs. They offered us burgers, cold drinks, and even ice cream, along with the luxury of WiFi to connect with our loved ones. It was a heartwarming welcome to the next chapter of our journey.
The Final Push
Drom and I had a shorter day ahead, with just 6 miles to cover, while Bear, Posh, Radio, and Rolodex opted to continue into the night. Tomorrow, we'd have a slightly longer day, but the excitement of reaching Ashland and enjoying our first zero day in 28 days outweighed any fatigue.
