Rule, Brittania! Marcelino Leads Great Britain in the WBC | Porterville Roots & Baseball Spotlight (2026)

Prepare for an exciting journey as we delve into the world of international baseball and uncover the inspiring story of Brad Marcelino, a local hero with a global impact!

The Pride of Porterville

While the United States will undoubtedly rally behind its team in the World Baseball Classic (WBC), there's a special reason why many from Porterville will be cheering for Great Britain too. You see, Brad Marcelino, a 1999 graduate of Monache High School, is the manager of this year's Great Britain team in the WBC. And he's not just any manager; Marcelino is a force to be reckoned with, promising that his team will bring their A-game to the tournament.

But here's where it gets controversial... Great Britain has been dealt a tough hand, placed in Pool B in Houston. Their journey begins on March 6 at 9 a.m. against Mexico, followed by a clash with the United States on March 7 at 4 p.m. On March 8 and 9, they face Italy and Brazil, respectively, both at 9 a.m.

To prepare, Great Britain will play two exhibition games, one against the Milwaukee Brewers in Phoenix on March 3 at 10 a.m. and another against the San Diego Padres in Peoria, Arizona, on March 4 at 10 a.m.

The top two teams from each pool will advance to the single-elimination quarterfinals on March 13-14. While Great Britain is considered an underdog, their performance in the 2023 WBC, where they nearly qualified for the quarterfinals after defeating Columbia and narrowly losing to Mexico 2-1, shows they are a team to watch.

And this is the part most people miss... Marcelino has been a cornerstone of the British National team since 1999. He's the son of Oscar Marcelino, a former national team player and coach at Monache. Both father and son are members of the Great Britain Baseball Hall of Fame, and Brad is one of only two members of the national team to have participated in every WBC for the country.

Marcelino's playing career is a testament to his skill. At the 1999 European Championships, he went 5-for-16, and in the 2001 European Championship, he hit a remarkable .346. He was named to the all-tournament team as an outfielder, and his batting average only improved, hitting .333 in the 2005 European Championships and .289 in the 2010 European Championships.

But it was at the 2011 European Championship Qualifier where Marcelino truly shone. He led Great Britain to the title with a remarkable .533 batting average, a true breakout performance.

After his playing days, Marcelino made a name for himself as a coach, starting with the University of San Diego, where he coached top players like Kris Bryant. He then moved on to the Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks organizations, serving as a hitting coach for Triple A Tacoma with the Mariners and the Visalia Rawhide in 2024. Now, he's a hitting instructor in the Diamondbacks organization.

Marcelino's Great Britain team is stacked with talent, featuring players with Major League experience. The standout players are New York Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. and catcher Harry Ford, one of the Washington Nationals' top prospects. Chisholm, one of baseball's best second basemen, is coming off an all-star, 30-30 season, where he hit 31 home runs and stole 31 bases.

Marcelino is proud of his team and their potential, saying, "This is a talented, exciting roster that will represent Great Britain with pride at the World Baseball Classic. I'm proud to have Jazz and Harry leading this group as co-captains - they bring the energy and competitiveness that define this team. We've assembled a world-class coaching staff, and we're ready for the challenge. This team is all in and eager to compete on the world stage this March."

Great Britain's baseball program also has another Porterville connection. One of the first players from Great Britain to play in the United States was Liam Carroll, who played at Porterville College. Carroll managed the 2023 Great Britain WBC team and has since gone on to coach in the Boston Red Sox organization, where he will manage High-A Greenville in 2026.

So, as the WBC approaches, remember to keep an eye out for Great Britain and their talented manager, Brad Marcelino. Will they surprise everyone and make it to the quarterfinals? Only time will tell.
