Big news for Falcons fans! The Atlanta Falcons are keeping Jeff Ulbrich as their defensive coordinator, a move that could significantly impact the team's future.
Kevin Stefanski, the new head coach, is already assembling his coaching staff, and retaining Ulbrich is a key first step. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, Ulbrich will continue leading Atlanta's defense.
But that's not all! Tommy Rees, who worked as Stefanski's offensive coordinator with the Browns in 2025, is likely to join the Falcons in the same role. Furthermore, Bill Callahan, who coached Cleveland's offensive line from 2020-2023, is also expected to return to Stefanski's staff, as reported by Rapoport and NFL Network Insiders Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo.
This indicates a reunion of sorts, but the decision to keep Ulbrich is particularly interesting. Owner Arthur Blank, during a January 8 news conference, recommended Ulbrich to the next head coach, though he didn't want to dictate the coordinator choices. Fortunately, Stefanski agreed, which will maintain stability for the Falcons' defense.
Here's the twist: While the Falcons' defense ranked 19th in points allowed and 15th in yards surrendered last season, it's packed with talent, blending young players and experienced veterans.
And this is the part most people miss... Before Ulbrich's arrival, the Falcons struggled with sacks, ranking 31st with only 31 sacks. However, in 2025, the pass rush improved dramatically, finishing with 57 sacks, ranking second in the NFL. Rookie James Pearce Jr. led the way with 10.5 sacks, while Jalon Walker had 5.5, and Brandon Dorlus logged 8.5. All three players will be under 25 next season. The secondary also features promising players like A.J. Terrell, Jessie Bates, and Xavier Watts.
Ulbrich's first season as defensive coordinator had its ups and downs. However, the defense was among the league's best against the pass for a significant part of the season, showcasing its potential during prime-time wins against the Bills and Rams.
