Clyde Best: Unsung Hero of Portland Timbers | FIFA World Cup Special (2026)

As the world gears up for the FIFA World Cup, a documentary is set to shine a light on an unsung hero of soccer, Clyde Best. This film, titled "Transforming the Beautiful Game: The Clyde Best Story," offers a unique glimpse into the life and impact of a player who left an indelible mark on Portland's soccer history.

The story of Clyde Best is one of courage, resilience, and the power of human connection. At just 17, Best embarked on a solo journey to London, a bold move that would shape his future. Arriving alone in a foreign city, he faced immediate challenges, including a wrong turn that led him to the doorstep of Clive Charles' mother. Little did he know, this chance encounter would forge a bond that would connect two soccer legends.

"He was a 17-year-old Black kid in London by himself, and nobody picks him up at the airport," shares Billy Merck, founder of Green Is The Color. This moment, captured in the documentary, underscores the challenges Best faced and the perseverance that defined his career.

Beyond the soccer field, the film delves into the racism Best encountered during his career. "It's a great story about racism, about perseverance," Merck adds. "It's a sports movie, a soccer movie, and a movie about overcoming obstacles."

The screenings, scheduled for June 4th and 5th at the Aladdin Theater, will feature a panel discussion with Best himself and former West Ham player Addy Coker. Merck encourages fans to attend, promising an inspiring experience that goes beyond the film.

"Make it a priority to go," Merck urges. "People will feel connected to Clyde, connected to the movie, and inspired in their own lives beyond the film."

This documentary is a testament to the power of sports to transcend borders and unite people. It's a story of how a young man's courage and talent shaped a sport and a city, leaving an enduring legacy. As we celebrate the beautiful game, let's also honor the pioneers like Clyde Best who helped shape it.
